New York London Paris Munich / Everybody talk about... etc.
I avoided compiling a list of my favorite music of 2005 because there's so damn much I didn't hear. Then Girish dropped a request in the comment section and I opted to compile a list of my favorite tracks of the year. (I guess that one could say it's a singles list, but, uh, many of them weren't proper singles and I heard very few of them on the radio.) Eschewing the sacred album format would have been unthinkable to me in college; thankfully the interweb/iTunes has loosened me up a little.
Here, in alphabetical order by artist, are fifty of my favorite tracks of the year. (I'm sure I'm missing dozens; these were the first fifty or so that popped into my head and were high on my iPod play count.)

Awesome.
Thank you, Ben mon ami.
I'll be dropping some bucks at iTunes tonight.
Are you kidding me? You asked me to make a list (basically). The pleasure's all mine.
And let me take this space to start filling in songs I neglected to mention:
-Annie "Me Plus One (James Iha Remix)"
-Jenny Lewis "Handle With Care"
-Stephen Malkmus "Malediction"
And let me add:
--Lady Sovereign, "Ch-Ching": this song has commandeered my head for the past week.
--And I (most belatedly) picked up AC Newman's "The Slow Wonder"; what a fine record that is.
And here's proof that Ben is months ahead of everybody else.
Good stuff ... but Gwen Stefani? C'mon Ben.
Oh Brennon, learn to love the B-A-N-A-N-A-S.
Woo-hoo for SM's "Malediction." But can I just say that that fucking White Stripes doorbell song makes me wish that the hanger slipped when my mama tried to abort me and instead of killing me, merely punctured my eardrums? I live the WS in general, but Jesus do I hate that song.
They're not from 2005 but "Cool" and "Luxurious" are atop my iTunes most-played list.
I even got the Pharrell single so I could hear her say (reassuringly) "You got it like that."
Oh I meant the Gwen album versions.
And here's another singles list: at Poplicks.
Yeah, I kinda took liberties by including "Hollaback Girl," but I figure it came out as a single in '05, so I'd claim it.
How the hell did I forget to mention My Morning Jacket's "Wordless Chorus"? I played that shit constantly for a couple weeks. It was also a song that really grew on me-- I initially thought it sounded like Maroon 5 doing Kid A.
Oh man-- that Poplicks list reminded me of Ben Lee's "Catch My Disease"! And "Galvanize"! And "Ruby Blue"! And...
